What are metatarsals?

Metatarsals are the five long bones in the forefoot which connect the ankle bones to those of the toes.

The first is linked to the big toe and the fifth, on the outer foot, links to the little toe.

Together, the five metatarsals act as a unit to help share the load of the body, and they move position to cope with uneven ground.

Injuries usually occur as a result of a direct blow to the foot, a twisting injury or sometimes over-use.

Treatment

Rest & Immobilisation with no exercise and sport is recommended for four to eight weeks.
Immobilisation can be achieved using a plaster cast or a removable plastic cast.
These casts provide compression limiting swelling and have a rocker sole underneath that allows early weight bearing. Research has shown that early weight bearing helps to speed fracture healing.
This plan depends on the damage and which metatarsal bone is involved.

There are several explanations. Rarely people are born with an additional toe (or more rarely finger) – known as polydactyl. The goal of treatment is a hand (or foot) that works well and looks typical. There are also practical concerns, such as removing an extra toe so the foot fits well into shoes, but with minimal scarring.

However, when looking at the heel from behind usually only the fifth toe is seen. If the foot is very flat, more of the toes can be seen – a so called ‘too many toes sign’, which may have been the case here.

A more simple explanation may have been an error when preparing the digital images for publication – sometimes referred to as ‘photo-shopping’ after one of the common computer packages used.

An elephants foot is designed in such a way that the skeleton of an elephant’s foot is angled, with a large pad of fat and connective tissue at the heel.
