1b) Can you name the group of bones involved?

Can you name the group of bones involved?

1b) The answer is

What are metatarsals?

Metatarsals are the five long bones in the forefoot which connect the ankle bones to those of the toes.

The first is linked to the big toe and the fifth, on the outer foot, links to the little toe.

Together, the five metatarsals act as a unit to help share the load of the body, and they move position to cope with uneven ground.

Injuries usually occur as a result of a direct blow to the foot, a twisting injury or sometimes over-use.

1c) Can you locate any of the bones on this diagram?

1c) The answer is

Treatment

Rest & Immobilisation with no exercise and sport is recommended for four to eight weeks.
Immobilisation can be achieved using a plaster cast or a removable plastic cast.
These casts provide compression limiting swelling and have a rocker sole underneath that allows early weight bearing. Research has shown that early weight bearing helps to speed fracture healing.
This plan depends on the damage and which metatarsal bone is involved.

3) Which former Spice girl is reported to have considered bunion surgery?

3) The answer is

Victoria Beckham

A bunion (called hallux valgus) is a painful bony bump that develops at the big toe joint. Bunions develop slowly and the increasing pressure on the big toe joint causes the big toe to lean toward the second toe. Also bunions tend to lead to hard, callused and red skin caused by your big toe and second toe overlapping, sore skin over the top of the bunion and changes to the shape of your foot, making it difficult to find shoes that fit

The exact cause of bunions remains unknown, though wearing badly fitting shoes is thought to make bunions worse.

Non-surgical treatments include bunion pads, orthotics (insoles) and wearing suitable footwear. These treatments can ease the pain and discomfort caused by a bunion, but they can’t change the shape of your foot.

If a bunion is causing a significant amount of pain and affecting quality of life, it can to be assessed for surgery. The aim of bunion surgery is to relieve pain and improve the alignment of your big toe. Surgery isn’t usually carried out for cosmetic reasons alone and even after surgery, there may still be limits to the styles of shoe that can be worn.

Which US president was unable to go into military service because of pain in his heel?

4) The answer is

Donald Trump received five deferments from the draft for military service during the Vietnam War, one for heel spurs.

Pain in the heel is a common complaint that occurs in approximately 10% of the population and has many causes. Heel spurs are pointed bony outgrowth of the heel bone (or calcaneus). These can be treated with insoles and footwear, there is usually no need to remove a heel spur unless it’s causing significant pain or restricting movement.

There are several explanations. Rarely people are born with an additional toe (or more rarely finger) – known as polydactyl. The goal of treatment is a hand (or foot) that works well and looks typical. There are also practical concerns, such as removing an extra toe so the foot fits well into shoes, but with minimal scarring.

However, when looking at the heel from behind usually only the fifth toe is seen. If the foot is very flat, more of the toes can be seen – a so called ‘too many toes sign’, which may have been the case here.

A more simple explanation may have been an error when preparing the digital images for publication – sometimes referred to as ‘photo-shopping’ after one of the common computer packages used.

8) True or False The human foot has the same bones as an elephant foot.

True or False The human foot has the same bones as an elephant foot.

8) The answer is

Both!

Elephants feet are unique and very interesting. They are quite different from other animal feet. An elephants foot is designed in such a way that the skeleton of an elephant’s foot is angled, with a large pad of fat and connective tissue at the heel. The angled foot structure means that elephants walk on their tiptoes with their body weight evenly distributed across the fatty/connective tissue at the heel.

All elephants do not have the same number of toes on each foot. The African elephants have 4 toes on their front feet and 3 toes on their back feet. Asian elephants on the other hand, have 5 on the front and 4 at the back.

Additionally there is considerable variation between elephants feet with bones being fused together in some animals – see https://www.researchgate.net/publication/312537289_Skeletal_pathology_and_variable_anatomy_in_elephant_feet_assessed_using_computed_tomography
